In Her Own Words

I wear many hats—author, speech-language pathologist, educator, and proud mother of two wonderful children. I am also the founder of VivLiv Books, a company dedicated to celebrating diversity and promoting bilingualism in children's literature. Through VivLiv Books, I spotlight the vibrant culture of the Caribbean, with a special focus on Haitian children's literature. My mission is to take young readers and their families on enchanting journeys that showcase the beauty, magic, and richness of Caribbean heritage. Each story weaves the traditions and tales of Haitian and Caribbean culture into fun, adventurous narratives filled with diverse, relatable characters.

My Background and Writing Journey

Growing up on the picturesque island of Haiti, I was immersed in its rich cultural traditions from a young age. My education, rooted in Haitian schools, provided me with a deep appreciation for my heritage and an early connection to storytelling. Storytelling was a cornerstone of my childhood. Almost every evening, my family would gather to share tales, jokes, and folktales. My grandmother, a masterful storyteller, was my greatest inspiration. Her vivid stories sparked my imagination and planted the seed for my own creative journey. By the time I was a young girl, I was already writing poems and crafting stories, and my father’s encouragement led me to dream of becoming an author. As a student, I embraced my passion for writing wholeheartedly. Journaling became my favorite pastime, and I recorded my thoughts, experiences, and adventures in countless diaries. By middle school, I had written my first book, which, while never published, was shared and cherished by family and friends. In high school, I founded a writers’ and book club with a small group of friends at Collège Saint Louis de Bourdon in Haiti. We read and critiqued each other’s work, exchanged ideas, and held one another accountable to meet writing deadlines. This supportive community nurtured my love for storytelling and solidified my commitment to becoming an author. Over the years, I have written numerous stories across genres such as adventure, fantasy, mystery, and historical fiction. While many of my early works remain unpublished, I still have them safely stored and look forward to sharing them with the world someday.

Beyond Writing

When I’m not writing, I enjoy staying active with dance fitness classes like Zumba, exploring nature on family walks, and traveling to discover new cultures. Visiting cozy coffee shops and spreading positive energy wherever I go are small joys that bring balance to my life. Through my books and my work with VivLiv Books, I aim to inspire children and families to embrace cultural diversity and the magic of storytelling. Together, we can explore the vibrant world of Caribbean stories and create lasting memories, one page at a time.

The Creation of VivLiv Books and My Sources of Inspiration

I founded VivLiv Books, my publishing company, in 2020, during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The idea stemmed from a deeply held belief that representation matters. It is vital for children to feel seen, valued, and celebrated in the media they consume, including books. Through my work with diverse families and children from across the world—especially from Haiti and the Caribbean—I noticed a common need for resources, stories, and characters that reflect their culture and heritage. Having grown up in Haiti, I bring personal knowledge and experiences to my work, blending my passion for storytelling with a mission to create meaningful cultural content. VivLiv Books was born out of my desire to fill a gap in Haitian and Caribbean children’s literature. My goal has always been to provide children with stories that resonate with their experiences and teach them about the richness of their culture.

Beyond my professional work, my childhood memories of Haiti have been a profound source of inspiration. The vibrancy of life, the warmth of the community, and the beauty of the Haitian landscape often find their way into my stories. Many of the characters, settings, and plots in my books reflect these cherished experiences, offering a window into the positivity and resilience of Haitian culture. My children also inspire my work. As a mother raising multilingual children, I am motivated to write bilingual stories that teach Haitian Creole and celebrate their heritage. Through books, children can embark on cultural journeys, exploring their identity and learning about their roots in fun and engaging ways.

Community and Partnerships:
VivLiv Books has collaborated with notable organizations and events, including:

  • Brooklyn Children’s Museum

  • Haiti Cultural Exchange

  • Haitian American Alliance of NY

The inclusion of Dalia Explores the Haitian Creole Alphabet in Scholastic’s Haitian Heritage Book Collection was a particular highlight. This initiative bridges a critical gap in classrooms, providing rich, culturally relevant literature to children worldwide. I was honored to contribute to this effort, which has brought my book into libraries and classrooms, enabling a broader audience to connect with Haitian culture.

Locally, my work is available at the Brooklyn Public Library, ensuring greater accessibility to culturally appropriate texts for students across New York City.

Media and Community Outreach:
My work has been featured in outlets like the Crown Heights Community Newsletter, where I am now a contributing writer. Through this platform, I write articles spotlighting community events, fellow authors, and creatives, further amplifying voices within our community.
